I've finished my book Everybody vs The Ferret

Book: Everybody vs The Ferret
Words: 5,714
Time: Noon - 6:30
Mood: Really good
Impression: The story ends strong

I've decided to write my blog entry early today because I am officially done! It seems that only the opening chapter for Everybody vs The Ferret was difficult. Once that was out of the way, I could just follow the script... literally. And it is definitely worth the read. Is it the funniest thing that I've ever written? No. But it is entertaining. And in a very clever way it makes a point about parenting and who we are as people. Much less tired than I was yesterday, I say that I like it!

I think that I'm going to edit and format it tomorrow. And after that I am going to include it as an extra in 'Fixing Cupid' and 'Happiness May Vary.' It might be inappropriate for my other books, so I'll just start there.

I also took a look at the Amazon program for short works called: Amazon Singles. I'm not sure if they would accept this one. But Everybody Masturbates and the other books in the series certainly fit. I submitted those. We'll see what happens.

I have to say that I'm pretty psyched about being done. But I swear I will actually take a week off once I'm done editing. That doesn't mean that I will take a week off from marketing. This would be the absolute worst time for that. But I will allow myself time to rest from writing words. And then after that rest, I will absolutely restart Samurai Zombie Hunter.

Ya know I swear, one would assume from the 5 months that I've put it off that Samurai Zombie Hunter isn't showing signs of being a great book. But it's really good. I guess I just wanted to do the easier things before it. I know that I will be working on Samurai Zombie Hunter for at least the next 2 months. Because of that, I'm glad that I took care of the other books first.

And if all goes as plan, I will be doing the second book in the Everybody vs The Ferret series in a month. I am treating this series like they were episodes of a TV show. TV writers write episodes very quickly. I would like to learn that skill. We'll see how I do.

I'm soooo tired!

Book: Everybody vs The Ferret
Words: 2,113
Time: 2 - 6
Mood: unhappy
Impression: I don't know. It isn't great.

I am so mentally exhausted! I NEED A BREAK! Honestly I think it was all of the work that I put into the description of Run From the Reaper that did me in. Mentally it was just taxing on me because I couldn't get it right. I don't know if I have it right now but no one else is suggesting changes so it is what it is. It is posted below.

Also, it took me a while to figure out the voice for Everybody vs The Ferret. I think that the source material for this book falls under the category of the one of the things that I wrote that I didn't find that funny but other people did. And I managed to make 'Fixing Cupid' funnier than the source material but so far I've only been able to make this book slightly funnier than the source material.

Really, over the next 2 days, all I have to write is as much as I did today and it will be done this weekend. That doesn't seem to be that big of a feat but I am battle mental fatigue at this point. I am really looking forward to rugby on Sunday. Doing more than sit ups as exercise will do good things to me I think. And I swear. After Everybody vs The Ferret, I am going to take at least a week off before I restart Samurai Zombie Hunter.

I just need a break I tell you. I just need a break.

Run From The Reaper

It awakens… Summoned by the will of a powerful psychic, The Red Reaper forces its victims to live their darkest fantasies. If they resist, they die.

In a college town during a record cold winter break, Jon, a lonely professor, wonders the empty campus barely holding on to his sanity. Unable to stay awake during the daytime he sees a red hooded creature in the shadows at night; immediately after, his twisted desires come to life.

Searching for answers he finds Clay, a local psychic who is more than he seems, and Sarah, a gorgeous expert on the underworld who has depraved secrets of her own.

Chased by demons and with the Red Reaper at every turn, the three must face their fears, survive its relentless attacks, and find a way to escape from the Reaper.

I sold 165 Kindle books in March

Words: Run From The Reaper
Mood: Defeated
Impression: It's getting better

Writing the description for Run From The Reaper is kicking my ass. I keep writing blurbs that I think are great. But then I post it and someone says, 'not so fast.' But ultimately they are right. My current attempt is below.

I didn't get my new cover today for some reason. Hopefully I will get it tomorrow. Once I do, the book will be uploaded. It will be on sale in 5 days.

I was also supposed to start writing Everybody vs The Ferret today. I reread the script, but didn't write. I wasn't sure what voice I was going to write it in. I also didn't know how I was going to use the book medium to make the story funnier. Unless I have to do a lot of rewriting of the Run From The Reaper blurb, I will write Everybody vs The Ferret tomorrow.

Now onto sales news. I got my kindle royalty payment for March. The check covers the time period after I discovered Kindle Boards. It was during March that I lowered all of my books to 99 cents, I released First Day After Life and retitled Happiness Thru The Art Of... Penis Enlargement to Happiness May Vary. I made $66.15 during that period. That means that I sold approx. 165 kindle books.

I am not checking my number right now so I can't say for sure. But that is about 5.5 books a day. Some will argue that it is thanks to my books being 99 cents. Maybe it is. But in April I increased all of the prices on my books except for my Everybody books. I need to make a living off of my books. And I will never do it if they are 99 cents. Besides, $2.99 is a bargain for one of my books. I'm sure people wouldn't mind paying it.

A new cover for my book: Run From The Reaper

Book: Run From The Reaper
Mood: A little defeated
Impression: The cover is very close, the blurb is sucking royally.

So here is the new cover for Run From The Reaper. Everyone seems to like it. There is only one exception it seems. That would be me. It just feels monotone to me. But seriously, I am the only one. So clearly I'm going with the majority.

Other than hanging out with friends today I also worked on the book description. Frankly, this is kicking my ass. I have made 4 complete passes at it. I haven't heard any feedback on the last one yet. I have posted it below.

With everything close I have set a release date for 6 days from now. It seems that I already have 1 sale. Hopefully that won't be my only one.

Description:
It awakens… In a college town gripped by a record cold, the Red Reaper is summoned. Unleashed, it is an unstoppable creature that forces its victims to live their most terrifying desires. If they resist, they die.

Jon, a lonely professor, barely holds on to his sanity. He visits Clay, a powerful psychic who promises to give him what he wants most. Unbeknownst to Clay, Jon’s twisted desires calls forth the Red Reaper. An endless night follows.

Sarah, a gorgeous expert on the underworld, falls for Jon and attempts to help the two men. But ensnared by the Red Reaper she is forced to join the two as they flee. To survive they must: figure out what the Reaper will do next; how to escape the Reaper’s relentless attack; and how to stay alive while they do.

My last day on the Season Finale of Bones

Book: Run From The Reaper
Book: Everybody vs The Ferret
Words: None
Time: None
Mood: Good
Impression: The cover is a winner

Today was my 5th and last day on the season finale of Bones. It was a good experience. The entire crew was pretty great and I am all over that episode. I will be the tall black guy in the yellow and blue plaid shirt.

This morning when I woke up, I received the first draft of the cover design for Run From The Reaper. Initially I was apprehensive. I didn't like the font and I thought that the colors weren't layered enough.

However, throughout the day I showed the cover to 12 people. They all liked it. What do you think? I requested 2 small changes and that's it. I should have it by the time I wake up tomorrow. So in the morning I post onto the Kindle Boards and start getting opinions from everyone there. They are usually really great with giving me their opinions.

After taking my survey I mocked up the cover for my 'Everybody vs The Ferret' series of books. There should be 6 of them produced 1 a month and they are based on my characters from my Everybody Masturbates book series. I have only showed the cover to one person and they didn't like it. Granted the person had just finishing saying how much they liked Run From The Reaper. And he had said that RFTR was my best cover. So EVTF must have paled in comparison. Oh well. I posted that cover below as well.

I think this new book is suffering from a lack of source material for use in making a cover. You can give me your opinion on that one too if you choose. :-)

I just finished my book: Run From The Reaper

Book: Run From The Reaper
Words: All of them
Time: 11-11 (minus 1.5 hrs for breaks)
Mood: Good, I guess
Impression: If I say not good, will you decide not to buy it?

OK, so I did a final reading of the book today. What I can say is that there are parts of this book that rise to real literary heights. And there are parts of this book that are pretty standard. I'm pretty sure that there's nothing about it that is bad. I'm just concerned that it might not perfectly satisfy horror readers.

But what I can say for sure is that there are a lot of people that will like this book. Will it be those that are naturally drawn to the cover? I will have to wait and see. But those who like my other books will also like this one.

Now I have to wait for my cover designer and I can upload it. Tomorrow I have my final day on the season finale of Bones. So Wednesday I will format it. That means that Thursday I will begin work on Everybody vs. The Ferret.

Ya know, I know logically that I'm writing at a frenetic pace. But there is a part of me that says that I should still be working harder. But for the life of me. I'm can't quite figure out where that extra work time will come from.

Oh well. That is what happens when you stop therapy.

Finished my first edit of: Run From The Reaper

Book: Run From The Reaper
Word: 6,483 (edited words)
Time: 3:30-7:30 & 9-Midnight
Mood: Tired
Impression: Supernatural Thriller readers will enjoy it

I only had 12 pages to edit today, so I decided to enjoy some of my day. After watching an Easter pageant I had lunch with a friend. I have to say that it felt good to spend time with friends again. I look forward to doing it more often now that I am almost done with my script conversions.

And because I had so little to do, I was definitely going to finish the second draft today. So now that the second draft is done, all that is left is for me to do is read the whole thing again. After that I will run it through the spell check. And finally I will wait for the cover designer to deliver the final cover. All of that should happen within the next 5 days.

The obvious question now is what am I going to do next? Well, I sort of want a comedy that readers who enjoy 'Fixing Cupid' can buy to hold them over until I write the next book in the series. I don't have a perfect hold over for those readers but I do have something else that I can offer them.

My 'Everybody Masturbates' books are, by far, my most popular series. And my original idea was to turn the books into a animated show for MTV, Comedy Central or Adult Swim. In preparation for that, I wrote a TV show pilot called 'Everybody vs. The Ferret'. So what I have decided to do next is turn that pilot into a novelette and sell it as an Amazon Single. Amazon Singles are a new thing that Amazon is doing to promote shorter books. Hopefully Amazon will accept it, but even if they don't it will be the next thing I work on.

'Everybody vs. The Ferret' should only take a day or two to convert. It is only about 6,000 words. In comparison, 'Run From the Reaper' is 30,000 words and took me 6 days. And if I could manage to find the time, what I will do after that is go back to my long set aside zombie book. But one week out of every month I will write a new installment of the Everybody vs The Ferret series.

That is the plan at least. All I can say for sure is that 'Run From The Reaper' will be the next thing I release. And that 'Everybody vs. The Ferret's' pilot will be the next thing after that. But who knows, maybe that will be the last thing that I ever write. We'll see.

Editing while on the Season Finale of Bones

Book: Run From The Reaper
Book: Fixing Cupid
Words: 10,382 (edited words)
Time: 1:30 - 12:30
Mood: Fine
Impression: It's OK I guess

I haven't done my editing this week because I worked very long hours on the Season Finale of Bones. It was a fun week and I have one more day left on Tuesday. The entire crew is great to work with and I had fun most of the time.

It was funny seeing the cast because when I saw the star Emily Deschanel this time around my first thought was 'wow she's put on some weight since the last time I saw her.' And all week I stared at her trying to figure out if she let herself go or if there was something else going on. On the last day this week I got confirmation by a conversation that she was having very loudly with one of the other actors that there was something else involved. I'm not going to say what though. I will respect her privacy.

As for me and my writing, I didn't get much work done while on set. I spent a lot of time in front of the camera. And as a result I am all over that episode. I'm the tall black guy in the yellow and blue shirt. And when I wasn't on set I was in holding with 100 very loud people. It took me 2 days before I thought to bring my ear plugs. After that I was able to get a few pages done.

Tomorrow I am going to a Easter Pageant and then hanging with friend afterwards so I might not get much done. But I only have 13 more pages to edit and I can do that in about 6 hours as long as there isn't much rewriting that I have to do. The last 20 pages have been pretty clean though so I suspect that I can finish the first draft of editing tomorrow. Afterwards it just a matter of a final read through and a final gramar check. After that I just wait to get the cover from the designer and I can publish it.

Today also brought the finalization of the excerpt exchange between author Heidi Hall and Lacy Maran with their romantic comedies and 'Fixing Cupid'. I'm hoping that it will be a successful exchange all of the way around.

Fixing Cupid becomes my bestselling book

Book: Fixing Cupid
Words: -
Time: -
Mood: Great
Impression: -

I am trying to stay clean and sober about checking my sales numbers and what I am also avoiding is sorting my books by 'Bestselling' on Amazon. Every so often I stumble onto my Amazon ranking, and with that in hand last night I felt it necessary to sort my books to see where the book fell.

That is what took me there. And last night 'Fixing Cupid' was my worst selling book. I kept checking and today at 4pm I checked again. It had become my 2nd bestselling book overall. And then at 5pm 'Fixing Cupid' became my bestselling book.

Now, did I edit today. No I didn't I was on the set of Bones again and I just didn't. I think that I could have, but I didn't. I think I will tomorrow though. Now off to bed. I have to be up in 4 hours.

...I could've had class!

Book: Run From The Reaper
Words: 1,368 (edited)
Time: 4:30-8:30pm
Mood: Not bad
Impression: It should sing

So I missed my goal by a little today. I was shooting for 10,000 words and I did 1,368. I didn't feel like a horrible slacker. I did edit a page while doing laundry. And then I put in 3 hours after that. I just think that his guy needs a lot of work. Again, this is what happens when you write a book in 6 days.

But what I'm hoping is that as it gets deeper into the story it requires less edits. It hasn't happened yet but it still could. I think that I've entered the 18,000 words that I wrote on the last days. I certainly didn't feel like I was writing crap at the time, so it has to get quicker, I think.

But in either case, I think that the story will sing. I've really started to consider what that reviewer said about my writing being intoxicating. Looking at the text for 'Run From The Reaper', I think that I see what he's referring to. Objectively speaking a lot of the time it's sensually rich. And a part of me considers if what it is is bad. But no, I don't think so.

The way that I'm turning the phrase in this story is different. I just finished writing 'Fixing Cupid'. That wasn't sensually rich. It was standard. And I did that so that the humor could shine. But 'Run From The Reaper' plays with the rhythm of the sentences. A lot of the time during this story I construct a sentence and thought, no, the last word of the sentence should have 2 syllables and begin with the letter 'R'. That has got to indicate that something special is going on with my writing style in this book. I've never thought that while writing another book.

Anyway, we'll see. Meanwhile I was involved in a very deep discussion about book price over the last few days. It all came out of a conversation I had with my roommate about the price of 'The First Day After Life.' He thought that it shouldn't be 99 cents. I thought that it should. It got into the research that I got access to while working at Disney's Brand Marketing department and I ended up sharing that info with the folks on Kindle Board.

I have to say that the conversation wore me out. Like so many times in my life, I felt like I was the only one on one side of a discussion with 10 people on the other. But I do have to say that there was one person that had my back during everyone's questioning. Thanks Debora! :-)

Here's the thread if you want to know how Disney breaks down their customers and how it can apply to ebook pricing. What I did get out of the conversation though was that my decision to release in multiple genres did conform with something Malcolm Galdwell discussed in 'The Tipping Point'.

What he basically talked about was that the way that companies increase revenue was by creating 30 different spaghetti sauces because there was no right spaghetti sauce. That way everyone who wants a spaghetti sauce can buy one from their brand. I am writing in 5 different genres. I used to think that it wasn't good because I didn't have a series. But now I'm looking at it as I am Prego and I'm creating 30 different spaghetti sauces.

Ok, that's it for me. Tomorrow I have to be on the set of the TV show Bones at 5:30 am. I'm already only going to get 4 hours of sleep at most. I still have to upload my new cover for 'Fixing Cupid' and post my word count on Kindle Boards. I will drag tomorrow.

All work and no play makes Cristian a 'something' 'something'

Book: Fixing Cupid
Book: Run From The Reaper
Words: 7,893 (edited)
Time: 2-5:30 & 9:30-3:30am
Mood: Ok
Impression: Wow this is taking long

First the cover. I am running a thread on Kindle Boards where people are giving me advice about the cover. Here's the link. On it a number of people have suggested changes. The last thing that I had to be convinced to change was the font. This is the new font that I chose. I think that it adds to the romance of the book. The down side is that I can't use this cover in places where the cover has to be smaller. The font become illegible then. I like the new font and the few people that have commented on it seem to like the new font as well.

I worked on that, very late Friday night. This morning I woke up at 10:30 ran errands and then edited 'Run From The Reaper'. I edited until I was to tired to continue then I took a nap. I woke up, cooked dinner and then edited until 1am. I then went to the store to get some desert and came back and wrote until 3:30am. That's about 8 hours of editing and I only edited 7,893 words. This is happening because I wrote it in only 6 days. It isn't like the text is very far off, it's just far enough off that I have to keep going over the same parts to make sure that it's clear.

At this pace it looks like it will take me another 4 or 5 days to edit it. I wouldn't take me that long accept that I am going to be working on 'Bones' next week. And I'm sure that I will be doing 12 to 14 hour days. I do suspect that I will get some down time on set, but because my call time is 5:30am I will have to take a nap before I can be creatively productive. That will cut into my editing time.

I also have a friend in town from the Bahamas. I'm not even sure whether I'll have time to see him. He came on Tuesday and then immediately went to a festival. This week would have been the perfect time to spend together. But instead we might only see each other once. I think he might still be here when my stint on 'Bones' is complete. But we'll see.

Now at 3:45am it's time for me to hit the Kindle Boards.

I need to edit everything this weekend!

Book: Fixing Cupid
Book: Run From the Reaper
Words: None
Time: -
Mood: Good
Impression: Good

Yesterday I did edit. I edited 1 chapter. But it was the hardest chapter for 'Run From the Reaper'. It was the first one. And for what ever reason I decided to do something a little different for this chapter. I made it Artsy. I didn't do it on purpose, that is just what came out.

Can't lie. It sounds really, really good when I read it aloud. But it also reminds me of the books that we discussed in College. Because it isn't your basic stuff. The first lines of the book are "Silence. A Breath cuts through the silence; then again silence." And then it carries on like that for 4 pages. Again, it sound really cool when I read it aloud. But will the reader instinctually read it like I intended. Also, this is supposed to be my mass market Supernatural Thriller. I am supposed to be making it as accessible as possible.

Actually, I did recently get a BRILLIANT review by this top 10 amazon reviewer and he referred to the writing in 'The First Day After Life' as "intoxicating". I read the book. I think it was alright. But the first Chapter of 'Run From the Reaper' would be something closer to intoxicating. But again, it is supposed to be mass market. Oh well. It is what it is.

Here is what I did like about the chapter. I have this thing about working instead of having a life. And I often compare it to never being able to stop running. And the first chapter is about this guy who is running from the 'Red Reaper'. And as long as he is running, the Reaper stays away. But the minute he stops it appears. In other words, his demons are chasing him, and whenever he stops he has to face them so he keeps running. I think that is one hell of an analogy. I knew my insanity would come in handy at some point.

The rest of my days were spent tweaking my cover and starting up a new facebook community called Funny Amazon Kindle Books. The purpose of the page is for Kindle readers to be able to quickly find funny kindle books. Check it out if you haven't. Like it. You will be glad that you did. :-)

Oh, and listen to this great story. I just joined the facebook community 'Amazon Kindle'. I posted a comment to say hello and someone immediately commented "Wow Cristian! Love 'The First Day After Life'". When I saw that I thought that she was referring to the cover. But, now I'm think that she read it. How coincidental is that. I don't know how many people bought it, but there couldn't be more than 10 or something. It's only been out a month. And it's long so it must have taken a while to read it. Yet I randomly meet her on line. How cool is that?

I really have to edit this weekend because all next week I will be working on the TV show 'Bones'. I really love that show, watching it and being on it. All of the women on the show are very attractive.

Also, our excerpt trading trio is complete. Lucy Maran and Heidi Hall and I will be trading excerpts. I think this will definitely be great for all of us. All three books are romantic comedies with male protagonists. We should boost each other's sales significantly. It should be a great win-win-win. And with that, my effort of Humor book world domination is taking shape. HooHahahaha!

Published 'Fixing Cupid' today

Book: 'Fixing Cupid'
Words: Published!
Mood: Awesome!
Impression: People will love it!

Today I published 'Fixing Cupid'. It should be live on Saturday. Yay! What I am most happy about is that I know that people will laugh hard while reading the book, and people are going to love it. I don't think that I have had such confidence about a book before. Of course, my last books were: Everybody Masturbates, Happiness May Vary (an adult humor book), and The First Day After Life (a spiritual book). They absolutely have an audience but they are slightly short of mass market. This romantic comedy for everyone... or at least almost everyone.

So, on this the day that I published the book, I finalized the description (which I have included below), and finalized the cover (this means that I converted it from a low resolution version to a high resolution version). It's good be done... with that one.

Starting tomorrow I will start editing 'Run From the Reaper.' It is a novella so I'm hoping that it doesn't take me more than 4 days. A childhood friend is coming into town on Monday, and it would be great if I could have all of my work done before I play. (That is what my mother used to say when I would play with him as a child.) No matter when I finish editing it though, I can't publish it until the cover is done. The designer doesn't have to have it done until the end of the month, so it probably won't be in much before that.

So after I finish editing and formatting 'Run From The Reaper', I finally get back to working a novel that isn't being adapted from a script; 'Samurai Zombie Hunter'. I've been putting it off, but it is about that time. Also, this book is the last original story that I will write for a while. The plan after that is to decide on which of my books would benefit the most from a sequel and write that. My goal is to earn a living from my books, and it is almost impossible to do it without an audience that returns for a second of your books.

All of this though, is really in preparation for Christmas. That is where all kindle author's wishes come true. At that time we all hope to take advantage of the big Kindle gift giving which is sure to occur. Wish me luck... or better yet, check out one of my books. I promise that they are all pretty good to great. :-)

Here is the description for 'Fixing Cupid':

Fixing Cupid

Ben Bonner is an uptight, conservative lawyer who has everything except for love. After one heart break too many, his best friend Carey arranges for him to move in with a magical character named Jack. Urban legend has it that whoever lives with Jack will immediately find their soul mate and live happily ever after. However this match comes with a catch because Jack is also a middle-aged party animal. And although he finds his roommates love, Jack also ruins every other aspects of their life.

Desperate to find his special one, Ben moves in and immediately meets Anna Henderson, a smart, beautiful woman who takes Ben’s breathe away. Anna, though, isn’t the type to sit around waiting for a man. She’s witty, spirited and she has a few secrets of her own. In fact, she isn’t even sure how much she likes Ben… which makes it too bad that in his frustration, Ben breaks Jack’s Cupid-like powers. With his powers gone, not only is Jack unable to get Anna to fall in love, but no one else in the world will be able to fall in love either.

So now with his life crumbling around him and the love of his life fading away, it becomes essential for Ben to get Anna’s help so that together they can; fix Jack, help the world to love again, and just maybe, live happily ever after.

'Fixing Cupid' is almost published!

Book: 'Fixing Cupid'
Words Edited: 13,000 (finished)
Time: noon-10:30pm
Mood: Great
Impression: Concerned again

So I have finished editing the book and 'Fixing Cupid' is about to be published. It is also formatted and I took my first pass at the description. I will post it below. The book really is very funny. I have no concerns about that at all. But in doing some research for my book I noticed that all of the top romantic comedies have female protagonists. 'Fixing Cupid' has a male protagonist. Oh oh! Is it that men aren't writing a lot of romantic comedy books or is that women much prefer to read stories about women. Oh oh!

Well, the book is what it is and it really is very funny. But I might have to tweak the description to hide something. I'm not sure what yet, but something.

Tomorrow I finalize the cover, and then start editing 'Run From The Reaper.' I'll post that description tomorrow.
